Lazy Sunday

Clayth left today, so yesterday we went on a big long walk around Gamba with Lena. I don't think I've mentioned this before, but Gamba (also called Plaine sometimes) is divided up into five different areas called "plaines." Le foyer is in Plaine 3, along with other houses built by Shell. Most of the other Plaines are not as nicely built as Plaine 3, because there wasn't much development oversight so it's a little bit haphazard and the quality of houses vary vastly. Here are some photos from our lazy Sunday, and a few from playing Ludo again on Friday.

Lena, Clayth and Gigi. I was red and had already won at this point! There isn't really a place to "hang out" other than each others rooms which are too small and stuffy, so we usually make a little miniature living room outside.

Arguing as usual.

This is like what our entire weekend looks like. Gigi and Clayth in my room. Photo by Perez.

This photo has terrible composition but I like it anyways because Gigi looks nice in it.

These guys are all over town. They always ramble around in a big group, bleating and scurrying to nowhere.

It is like this everywhere in Gamba. Clayth always says "This Is Africa" or "TIA" when something very typical happens, and this was one of his examples. Another example was when I got an insect called le chique in my foot. They say the English word is chigger, but it's not really the same as a chigger because le chique lives in dirty sand and burrows into your toe, lays eggs, and then the eggs hatch and spread to your other toes. Luckily I noticed it before the eggs had hatched so we were able to cut out the egg sac and le chique. It was uh, really really gross. TIA!

This is another very typical shot of Gamba. Lots of buildings that are unfinished, for one reason or another, usually because money runs out. Some of them have been in this condition for years and years, with vegetation growing all over them. All of the buildings here are made out of concrete bricks.

Clayth getting a haircut. It cost 1000 F CFA (about $2.00) which he said was really expensive. In Libreville he only pays 500 F CFA. Things are more expensive here because it's so difficult to ship things here.

Me not listening to Clayth. No just kidding but that's what it looks like. This was on our way back, I think the bar was called "La Vie est Belle" or something. There was absolutely no one there aside from a sleepy waiter. I think it was in Plaine 2.
